Michigan offers a passport that lets you discover adventures without leaving the state. Michigan State Parks began the Recreation Passport program last year to boost revenue and public interest in Michigan's outdoor resources.
The Recreation Passport replaces the state park sticker and will get you into all state parks, state recreation areas and state boat launches for no additional charge. Priced at $10, it's a deal compared to the $24 annual window sticker. The idea is to keep it very simple and very affordable for everybody. Non-resident visitors must still purchase a non-resident Recreation Passport at the rate of $29 for an annual permit or $8 for a daily pass. An average of 28,000 non-resident annual permits are sold each year.
The revenue from the Recreation Passport goes to preserve and protect local parks, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks.
Your vehicle registration and license plate tab are your proof of purchase and it's valid during the same period as your registration(from birthday to birthday). When you renew your license plate and purchase a Recreation Passport at the Secretary of State, your new tab will have a "P" printed on it. If your birthday hasn't come up yet, don't worry. This first year you won't need the passport if your 2010 vehicle registration hasn't expired. Once you blow out the candles on your cake, head to the Secretary of State and get the Passport.
The Secretary of State is not the only place selling passports, however it is the cheapest. Residents can buy a passport at the state parks and recreation areas provided that their vehicle is due for registration. It will cost more. In 2012, the Passport fee will be $15 and will double in 2013. The Secretary of State will remain the same at $10.
The Recreation Passport also offers a Passport Perks program, which offers discounts at participating businesses around the state. More than 200 businesses are involved. For more information on this program, state events and the Recreation Passport go to www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport.
This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy our State Parks and all the beauty of our state!!!
