Our kids are back to school and if they are asked to bring in snacks do you know which are best? If we do not provide healthy snacks we are setting our chidren as well as ourselves up for tooth decay. Snacks that stick to the tooth surface or contain unnecessarily high volumes of sugar can accelerate tooth decay. This is caused by bacteria and other microbes that make your mouth their home. Bacteria love sugars and use it as fuel to power reproduction and basic living functions they need to survive. This means they produce wastes and those wastes wreak havok on our teeth and gums by becoming acidic and wearing away teeth. Bad snacks include high sugar chewy bars, sticky candies such as caramels, hard candies, high fructose corn syrup drinks such as soda in addition to snacks such as cakes or cookies that stay on teeth for an extended period of time. There are many snacks choices that are great for your teeth and they include fruits, vegetables and cheese. A simple way to curve your sweet craving is to chew sugar free gum. We suggest gums that use xylitol as there only source of sweetener. This gum also offers a sensation of ingesting something sweet and can help to limit making bad choices. Snacks that provide fiber such as apples, pears and oranges can help to keep you feeling full longer while providing vitamins and minerals that help you maintain a healthy system.
